Adzuki Beans

General description

Adzuki beans are small, reddish-brown beans, rounded in shape with a point at one end, or more commonly known as Red Beans. They have a strong, nutty, sweet flavour, and are much used in the macrobiotic diet. Adzuki beans are more easily be digested than most beans due to a very low fat content. Besides, they are a good source of magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc copper, manganese and B vitamins. When combined with grains, beans supply high quality protein, which provides a healthy alternative to meat or other animal protein.

Health benefits

i) Reduce blood pressure

Adzuki beans are high-potassium, low-sodium food that can help reduce blood pressure or act as a natural diuretic. In Japan, adzuki beans are commonly known for their healing properties and are used to support kidney and bladder function

ii) Reduce cholesterol level

Adzuki beans are rich in soluble fibre, these fibre provide bulks to the stool and aid in elimination of toxins and excess cholesterol from the body.

iii) Good choice for people on diet

Often referred as “weight-loss bean” as Adzuki beans are low in calories, but high in nutrients

How to select and store

Store in cool, dry place. Can be cooked, made into tea or served with rice.
